volunteer mary annMary Ann LoFrumento is a pediatrician and author who is currently the Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Residency at the Goryeb Children’s Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey and a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine.

Mary Ann is also one of the founding members of Hands Up for Haiti and the director of the Pediatric Global Health Education Program. Joining with Haiti Village Health in 2011 to work on their pediatric program and to help with improvements to the clinic in Shada, Mary Ann has dedicated herself to working towards sustainable health care for the children of northern Haiti.

In November 2011, a team from Hands Up for Haiti, led by Mary Ann LoFrumento, travelled to Cap Haitien and Bod me Limbe to continue a pediatric immunization and malnutrition program, Medika Mumba, that had begun a year earlier. Over three days, the team examined over 400 children in three locations and helped them complete their vaccinations, receive anti-parasite medicine, and receive sight saving Vitamin A.

Twenty-two children were enrolled in the Medika Mumba program and the team did outreach to several villages in the surrounding area. It is estimated that there are about 10,000 residents in the area served by this sole clinic and about half are children. All children under five and pregnant women receive free care. Other patients are charged a nominal charge to see the on staff Haitian doctor.
